Brief overview:
The Mexico-Guatemala Cross-Border Region Research Project is a large-scale scientific initiative bringing together more than 90 researchers. The overall objective of the project was to carry out an assessment and analysis of the cross-border regional development taking place around the border between Mexico and Guatemala, adopting a multidisciplinary approach that considered economic, social, cultural and environmental issues to identify vulnerabilities and potentialities.
Consultancy services provided were centered on the development of a study to assess the creation of a cross-border social security system between Mexico and Guatemala, and provide the basis for the design of a cross-border regional Social Security system focusing on the portability of migrant workers’ rights.
That included a comprehensive assessment of the legal frameworks and social security systems in both countries — considering national and local laws and regulations — and their respective financial structures. It also included a comparative analysis to identify common norms, institutional frameworks, and financing structures.
